(BLOOMINGTON) - A 12-person jury has found 23-year-old James Finney guilty of the November 2011 shooting death of Adam Sarnecki.
22-year-old Adam Sarnecki, was killed in a Bloomington Pizza X parking lot after he caught Finney breaking into another employee's vehicle.
The jury unanimously found Finney guilty on three counts, including one count of murder and two counts of possessing a handgun without a license.
After announcing the verdict, the jury was told Finney was previously convicted of intimidation, which raises one of the handgun charges to the next level. The jury was then sent back into deliberation on that count.
After almost seven hours of deliberation jurors also found Finney guilty of two misdemeanor charges of carrying a handgun without a license. Because Finney had a previous conviction of felony intimidation in August 2009, the handgun charges have been upgraded to felonies.
Attorneys on the case completed closing arguments this morning.
Prosecuting attorneys argue James Finney shot Adam Sarnecki in the parking lot of the pizza store. They say Sarnecki was unarmed and the act was unprovoked.
But defense attorneys say Sarnecki chased Finney after he found Finney breaking into a car. They say that indicates Finney was acting out in self-defense.
