(SALEM) - Have you ever wanted to take a lap around the Salem Speedway? Now is your chance.
The Leader Democrat reports that the speedway is the start/finish point for the Eddie Gilstrap Motors Scenic Scavenger Tour benefit fundraiser for Washington County SOAR.
Everyone participating in this year's event will do two solo laps around the Salem Speedway's renowned 33-degree-banked half mile track before departing for the scavenger tour portion of the event.
The event is Saturday, Oct. 12. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the Salem Speedway. There will be a drivers meeting at 9:45 a.m., and the tour will begin at 10 a.m.
Participants may pre-register by calling Erica Schmidt at 812-896-1515, or e-mailing email@example.com or calling Nancy Grossman at 812-883-4855.
There is an early registration discount for the first 15 vehicles to register of only $20. The registration fee per vehicle is $24.95.
The scenic scavenger tour is a fun and engaging activity for people of all ages. Many prizes are available for those participating.
Each vehicle or "team" is given a detailed packet describing the day's route, which is usually between 40 and 50 miles long, requiring up to 3 1/2 hours to complete.
Many points of interest are highlighted along the way.
To compete for the prizes, each team is required to answer questions about things observed along the route. There is also a "scavenger hunt" where various items are collected along the way. The number of correct answers and collected items are tallied to determine the winners of the event.
Each team is also asked to collect pledges for the event to benefit the SOAR literacy program. The team collecting the most pledges will also receive a prize.
All proceeds will go to the SOAR program, which offers free one-on-one adult literacy training, GED preparation and life skills training.
Sponsors of this year's event include Eddie Gilstrap Motors, Leader Publishing Company of Salem, Inc., Karen York, Denise and Frank Newkirk, Jr., Country Cookin', First Harrison Bank and Green Banner Publishing.
