Greene Co. Residents Can Get Rid Of Unused Or Expired Medication Saturday

Last updated on Friday, October 11, 2013

(UNDATED) - Greene County residents can get rid of unused or expired medications on October 12th, during Operation Medicine Cabinet.

The operation is designed to help people dispose of medication safely, as opposed to flushing the drugs down their toilets and causing them to enter the water system.

Greene County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) District Coordinator Deborah Lynn noted that the medications they will accept are not limited to human drugs but also include pet prescriptions. They have decided to accept certain items as donations, as well.

"If people have unused or unwanted medical supplies that are unopened we would be happy to take those and donate those to St. Ann's next week," Lynn explained. "But any medications that are dropped off will be destroyed."

Lynn said medical supplies they are looking for include steri-strips and band aids in packages that are in good shape, and added that she hopes the operation will have a good turnout this year.

"No matter how much we advertise this, and we've done more advertising this year than any year in the past, there are still people who don't seem to know about it. So I would appreciate it if anyone reading this would be sure to tell everybody about it so they know and can bring their meds in if they want to."

Operation Medicine Cabinet will be held on October 12th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. You may drop medications off at any of four locations: Stockton Township Fire Department in Linton, Richland Township Fire Department in Bloomfield, Wright Township Fire Department in Midland, and Center Township Fire Department in Little Cincinnati.

The SWCD is currently located at the courthouse, due to the government shutdown. For more information you may contact the SWCD at 384-4781, ext. 3.
