(BLOOMINGTON) - Duke Energy has shut off power in downtown Bloomington as a safety precaution following a gas.

The power outage will affect most to the courthouse square and should be limited to the east side of the square.

Bloomington Fire Chief Roger Kerr says all the businesses and residences in the 100 block of Walnut Street and those off of Sixth Street have been evacuated.

Crews found a gas leak in the basements of Williams Jewelry and Athena's; traces of gas were also found at Caveat Emptor and Opie Taylor's.

Earlier in the day a gas leak was detected in an alley off of Sixth Street, between Walnut and Washington streets, in downtown Bloomington.

The following streets are closed to traffic as crews repair the leak:
4th and Walnut
Kirkwood and Walnut
Kirkwood and Washington
Kirkwood and College
Sixth and Walnut
Sixth and College
Sixth and Washington

No traffic is allowed in the area and there is limited pedestrian traffic.
