Former Seymour Mayor Bill Bailey Running For Congress

Last updated on Friday, October 4, 2013

(SEYMOUR) - Former Seymour Mayor Bill Bailey is running for Congress.

He announced his candidacy on Wednesday, saying the government shutdown just reinforces his ideas of why the current Congress must go.

Bailey is running against Republican incumbent Todd Young for the Ninth District seat in the House of Representatives.

He also released a statement to the media detailing why he wants to be a member of Congress.

With the federal government shutdown continuing, Bailey labeled the current Congress as "dysfunctional and unproductive."

"Members of Congress seem more interested and intent on finger pointing, political bickering and polarizing than governing," Bailey said.

"Instead of giving confidence, Congress creates fear and uncertainty of a government shutdown and a default on the U.S. debt."

Bailey touted his experience as a businessman, mayor and state leader, and said he believes in term limits and protecting the middle class.

"We need someone who believes that people deserve the same equal treatment as corporations," he said.

Young first won election in 2010, and will be seeking his third term in the U.S. House in 2014.
