(SALEM) - Salem canines and their owners will soon have a place all their own to romp and play.
The Salem Democrat reports that property behind the animal shelter on Joseph Street is being transformed into a dog park.
The City's Animal Control Officer Rick Stewart says the area will be about the size of a football field. City workers have been working to clean up the area and now the site is fenced and another area with in the park will be used as an agility course for dogs.
City employee Gary Bush has been busy building the obstacles, including a teeter-board, weave bars, slide, hurdles and jump bars.
Bush has also been working on a large metal building next to the shelter, installing a ceiling and walls. When finished, the building will contain more pens, in addition to the pens in the shelter itself. It will be used for overflow and to separate dogs in quarantine. Improvements are also planned for the shelter, including adding outside runs. Those improvements should be done by the end of October. Once complete, plans are to hold an open house to showcase the park and the improvements.
