Motorist Stops Another Driver He Believed Was Stealing Items From His Property

Last updated on Tuesday, October 29, 2013

(NEEDMORE) - Someone could be facing criminal charges after police responded to an accident on McFadden Ridge Road Friday morning.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, 53-year-old Robert Hughes spotted a driver in a 1995 General Motors Jimmy who he believed had stolen some items from his property at 1531 McFadden Ridge Road the day before and had returned to steal more items.

Hughes, who was traveling south on McFadden Ridge Road in a 1996 Ford F-150, collided head-on with the Jimmy, driven by 31-year-old Ryan Chambers, of 299 Sasser Drive.

According to police, Hughes then began pushing the Jimmy backwards for about 30 to 40 feet into a parked farm tractor. The tractor had a hay spike on it and the Jimmy was pushed into the spike, which protruded through the rear tailgate of the Jimmy, preventing it from moving.

Hughes was not injured in the crash, but Chambers had a knot on his neck and complained of neck pain. Chambers' passenger, 24-year-old Ashley Shelton, of Martinsville, complained of back pain. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The accident and theft are investigation and criminal charges are pending.
