(LINTON) - A child suffering from multiple injuries, allegedly sustained as a result of ongoing abuse, was taken to Greene County General Hospital early Friday.

The Greene County Daily World reports that two people have been arrested in connection to the child's injuries that happened over a two-week period.

According to Linton Police Chief Troy Jerrell, officers received a report of the possible abuse and when they arrived at the Linton home the child was taken to the hospital.

Chief Jerrell says the investigation is ongoing, and some of the details of the case cannot be released at this time.

Police arrested 29-year-old Michael Liechty and 19-year-old Bonnie Rene Bambi Lynn Irvin, both of Linton.

Liechty lived at the Linton home with his child and his girlfriend, Irvin. According to a police report, the young child had been strangled, battered, thrown into a wall and on the floor, hit with a wooden object, and confined while being held in cold water for long periods of time.

Officers on the scene called for an ambulance and the child was transported to the hospital. The Department of Child Services was also notified and they are involved in an investigation. No additional information on the child's condition has been released.

Police allege both Liechty and Irvin had been physically abusing Liechty's child for a minimum of several weeks.

Both suspects were interviewed by officers and according to police reports, both admitted to causing various injuries to the child.

Police say a search of the residence, located at 625 N. Grant St. in Linton, yielded evidence including the wooden object allegedly being used to strike the child.

Liechty is being held on preliminary charges that include: Neglect of a dependent resulting in injury, a class C felony; battery resulting in injury to a minor, a class D felony; neglect of a dependent -- depriving dependent of necessary support, a class D felony; and neglect of a dependent -- cruel confinement, a class D felony.

Irvin is being held on preliminary charges that include: Strangulation, a class D felony; neglect of a dependent resulting in injury, a class C felony; battery resulting in injury to a minor, a class D felony; neglect of a dependent -- depriving dependent of necessary support, a class D felony; and neglect of a dependent -- cruel confinement, a class D felony.

Information from the investigation is being forwarded to the Greene County Prosecutor's Office where final decisions will be made on what possible criminal charges the couple might face when criminal cases are filed against them in court.
