Brownstown Firefighters Evacuate Area Because Of Gas Leak

Last updated on Wednesday, October 16, 2013

(BROWNSTOWN) - Brownstown firefighters responded to a natural gas leak Monday at 12:06 p.m. the leak was in the basement of a home at 518 South Poplar Street.

That leak led to the brief evacuation of about 30 Brownstown residents from a one-block area around the home.

According to Captain Travis McElfresh the level of natural gas built up inside the house was high enough to be explosive. So firefighters called for the evacuation to allow the gas to dissipate enough so that gas workers and firefighters could enter the residence and determine the cause of the leak.
