Last updated on Thursday, October 31, 2013

(TERRE HAUTE) - A bronze statue of Larry Bird will be was on display at the Indiana Pacers season opener but will make its home on the Indiana State University campus.

The 15-foot tall statue will eventually be placed on the ISU campus where Bird started his college career. The official unveiling is scheduled for November 9.

The idea for a statue started with Bill Wolfe, an ISU student who saw a statue of Bird's old time rival Magic Johnson at Michigan State's campus. He thought ISU needed a similar tribute to its basketball legend.

"He is by far our best known alumi and also as a student athlete as well as professional athlete and his success in his industry which is professional basketball," ISU Foundation President Ron Carpenter says. "It's just a great way to honor probably, like I said Indiana States favorite son."

Bird is the only person to win NBA Player of the Year, NBA Coach of the Year and NBA Executive of the Year.
