Bedford Woman And Children Hurt In Crash

Last updated on Thursday, October 3, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Three people were injured after a woman crashed her vehicle on Old U.S. 50 East Wednesday afternoon.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, 41-year-old Tonya Murphy, of 226 Perry Street, was traveling east on Old U.S. 50 East when for an unknown reason Murphy's 2004 Chevrolet Malibu went off the right side of the road hit a tree and a guard rail.

Murphy was trapped in her car. Her two children were out of the vehicle and sitting in a vehicle of a passer-by waiting for emergency workers when police arrived.

Bedford Fire Department freed Murphy from her vehicle. BFD Fire Chief Jon Wagner says the extrication was difficult because Murphy had sheared off the guard rail post and they were inside the vehicle.

"Firefighters had to do some maneuvering but were able to get the job done quickly," Wagner says.

Police found a half empty beer can in the passenger side floor board. Police say Murphy smelled liked she had been drinking prior to the accident and insisted she take a blood-alcohol test. Those results are pending.

Murphy suffered a possible broken leg and other injuries and her passenger 10-year-old Maylin Murphy suffered internal injuries. Both were flown by helicopter to an Indianapolis Hospital.

7-year-old Kaylin Murphy had bruises and contusions and was taken to a local hospital for treatment and later transported to Indianapolis by an Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital ambulance.
