(BEDFORD) - The North Lawrence School Board IS looking for someone to fill the seat of vice president Wendell Nikirk.
The plan calls for the new member to be sworn in at a Nov. 14 meeting.
Under Indiana law, the board has 30 days from the time a vacancy occurs to appoint someone to the seat.
Nikirk represented the school system's first district. Although the board plans to verify the district's boundaries today, school board president Gary Holmes says the district encompassing all of Perry and Indian Creek townships as well as a western portion of Spice Valley Township.
The new member will fill out the rest of Nikirk's term. The seat is up for election in November 2014.
The deadline for applying to fill the vacancy will be 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 23. Letters of interest and a resumes should be sent to: Gary Holmes, NLCS board president, North Lawrence Community Schools Administration Building, P.O. Box 729, in Bedford.
The board will meet Oct. 24 to review applications and refine the roster of candidates.
The board maintains the option of asking candidates to complete a questionnaire by Nov. 1.
Three finalists will be interviewed on Nov. 7, when an executive session of the board is scheduled, and the new member will be named.
Nikirk served on the NLCS board from 1975-1990 and from 2003 until his death. He ran for the seat without opposition in 2002, 2006 and 2010.
