Washington Co. Officials Close Bridge And Are Waiting For Damage Report

Last updated on Tuesday, September 24, 2013

(SOUTH BOSTON) - An overweight vehicle may be responsible for damage to a bridge near South Boston, forcing the Washington County Highway Superintendent Jerald Shanks to close it.

The bridge, built in 1930 on Canton South Boston Road, spans the Middle Fork Blue River and is rated 12 tons.

Jerald Shanks says the southeast corner of the bridge had been moved about a foot.

The Leader Democrat reports, Shanks closed the bridge after being contacted by Leo Rumschlag, with Ruschalag Technical Services who is contracted to do bridge inspections for the county.

Commissioner David Brown says the 105 foot bridge has rusted t-rails and is scheduled for rehabilitation next year. The county set aside $90,000 for the project.

But now officials are not sure the bridge can be saved. Officials are waiting for a final report on the damages.
