(BEDFORD ) - Two Danville, Illinois men were arrested after one stole items from WalMart and then they both fled from the scene in a vehicle, leading police on a vehicle pursuit.

Bedford Police arrested 40-year-old Torrence Woods on a charge of theft, resisting arrest by fleeing and obstruction of justice and 38-year-old Trenton Johnson on charges of resisting arrest by fleeing in a motor vehicle and assisting a criminal.

According to Bedford Police Department Assistant Chief Joe DeWees, Wal-Mart security called the police department at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday.

A security officer saw Woods shoplifting.

An off-duty officer who was in the store also saw the theft and stopped Woods and identified himself as a Bedford Police officer, but the two left the store and got into a black Nissan SUV. Johnson was driving.

They turned onto Williams Boulevard and traveled south Ind. 37. A Bedford Police officer arrived on the scene and followed the two on Ind. 37 and onto Ind. 158.

Bedford Police Department Assistant Chief Joe DeWees says the officer activated his emergency lights but Johnson refused to pull over. That is when the officer saw something thrown from both the driver and passenger side windows of the SUV.

"It was a slow-speed pursuit, they never went over 40 mph," DeWees said. "They just didn't stop."

The Lawrence County Police Department officers were called to assist. Eventually, Johnson pulled the vehicle over near Western Hills subdivision on Ind. 158 and the men were arrested.

Johnson and Woods are both still at the jail with bonds set at $15,000 surety.
