(BEDFORD) - Tri County Builders was awarded the bid to begin on the city's storm sewer project by the Board of Works Monday afternoon.

Utilities Director Misty Adams says the city had a chronic problem with flash floods because of inadequate or deteriorating storm sewers.

The area of concerns are:

* An alley between Eastern and Western avenues and 27th and 29th streets. There is no storm sewer there. Plans are to install a storm sewer to stop the flooding.

* A drainage ditch city workers call the "U Street Channel" near John Williams Boulevard and U Street. Adams says there are some erosion issues and overall disrepair. The structure was b uilt during the Works Progress Administration days of the Great Depression.

* Lincoln Avenue near Sixth Street, where the plans call for installing a new storm sewer.
The three areas will be done as part of one overall project, which will be completed by June 2014.

The city received a $1 million grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs to address the flooding issue. Not all of the work will be covered by the grant, the city must put up $50,000 in matching money, which will be paid out of the rainy day fund.

Tri-County Builders of Bedford's bid was $642,300.
