(BLOOMINGTON) - Some people living near the Indiana University campus in Bloomington are upset with plans to demolish six houses near their neighborhood to make room for a new large fraternity house.
University officials plan to tear down the IU-owned properties a couple blocks north of the Memorial Union in a land swap with the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. That group is giving up its current house next the Maurer School of Law building.
The Herald-Times reports more than a dozen people spoke against the plan during Wednesday's Bloomington City Council meeting. The council can't stop the demolition, but residents argue that a large fraternity house doesn't fit the character of the University Courts Historic District.
IU officials say the university's master plan calls for a residential building at the site.
