(SALEM) - Plans are being made to have Lake Salinda as a backup water source for the City of Salem.
Marica Walker of the Leader Democrat reports that Steve Tolliver with Aqua Utility Services, the company that manages the treatment plants for the city, has conducted an operational review of the plant, including the plant, the lake and the dam and says the plant can be up and running as soon as officials determine the best way to pre-treat the water and inspect the dam.
He added the vegetation that grew on the bottom of the lake when the water level was down is decomposing and depleting the oxygen level. He believes the best option for pre-treatment is hydrogen peroxide. He also says the dam needs to be inspected.
Lake Salinda in 1947 was once the primary drinking water source for the city. It went through a renovation in 1979 and another major renovation during the winter-spring of 2006-07. It was replaced by Lake John Hay, which went online in 1968.
The city is in the process of applying for a loan to cover costs of dredging Lake Salinda to bring it back to its full capacity.
In addition to Salem residents, the city provides water to much of Washington County, including the East Washington Water Corporation and Pekin.
