(SWITZ CITY) - A small pony was killed Thursday night when a group of horses got out onto a highway in front of an oncoming vehicle and the driver was unable to avoid hitting the animal.

Greene County Sheriff's Deputy Bobbie Pierce was dispatched to the scene on State Road 54 in the area of County Road 800 West, west of Switz City, around 10:44 p.m.

According to the police report, 49-year-old Dianna L. Hancock, of Bloomington, was driving a black 2007 Ford Edge eastbound on the highway when several horses crossed the road in front of her vehicle.

Hancock told the officer she attempted to avoid hitting them but struck the pony.

Pierce said the pony suffered fatal injuries in the crash but no other injuries were reported.
