Mitchell Woman Will Serve As Missionary In Hermosilo Sonora Mexico

Last updated on Tuesday, September 24, 2013

(MITCHELL) - Meghan Ray, a 2012 graduate of Mitchell High School and daughter of William and Missy Ray of Mitchell, has been called to serve as a full-time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

She will spend 18 months in the Hermosillo Sonora Mexico Mission located in the northwest quadrant of that country.

Ray attends Ivy Tech in Bloomington where she studies psychology. Since early childhood, she has had a strong interest in serving a mission.

In October 2012 at the semi-annual General Conference of the church, President Thomas S. Monson announced changes in the ages at which young men and young women might serve as full-time missionaries, with young men now being able to serve at age 18 instead of 19 and young women at 19 instead of 21.

The response was immediate. The number of full-time missionaries serving around the world has increased to 75,000. To date, more than 20,000 individuals like Ray have received their calls but have not yet entered a missionary training center.

An additional 6,000 have submitted applications and have entered into the interview process with their bishops and stake presidents.

Because of the responce, the church has found it necessary to create 58 new missions to accommodate the increased numbers of missionaries.

The position is voluntary and self-financed.

Ray will report to the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, in November for several weeks of intensive training in how to share the gospel in the Spanish language. She will then reports to the Hermosillo mission, where she will be known as Sister Ray and will live and travel with a sister missionary companion and share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
