Mitchell Junior-Senior High School To Show Off New Cafeteria

Last updated on Thursday, September 12, 2013

(MITCHELL) - From 6-9 p.m. on Sept. 27, residents of Mitchell are invited to an open house to view the renovated and expanded kitchen and cafeteria area at the Mitchell Junior-Senior High School.

Mitchell Superintendent Steve Phillips says that evening the Mitchell football team will host Brown County and the Mitchell Persimmon Festival will be in full swing. He is hoping families will visit the area during halftime.

The Times Mail reports that the $2 million construction project was completed before school started and ended Mitchell's open campus, where students could leave for lunch. The construction was paid for by refinancing a bond issue at a lower interest rate. It extended the time of debt, but did not raise the payment.

School officials and parents said the policy gave students a break from school routine. But administrators blamed it for a host of issues, including disciplinary and attendance problems. In addition, an insurance company and an organization that accredits schools recommended the campus be closed.
