Loogootee Man Killed In Fiery Crash Saturday

Last updated on Tuesday, September 17, 2013

(HELTONVILLE) - Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig has identified the man killed in a crash on Elkins Road Saturday.

31-year-old Nathan Arthur was traveling west on Elkins Road when the 2006 Pontiac he was driving ran off the south side of the road, hit a tree stump, flipped landed in a field and caught on fire.

Arthur, of Loogootee, was dead when police arrived on the scene.

According to Sheriff Sam Craig, because of the severity of the burns and the lack of identifying information from the vehicle fire, a positive identification was not able to be made at the time of the accident.

According to Jon Freeman, who heard the accident and called 911, he believed Arthur was traveling at a high-rate of speed because he heard the tires make a "squealing noise" right before the loud crash. When Freeman stepped outside of his home onto his front porch he could see flames shooting from the vehicle.

Pleasant Run Volunteer Fire Department, An IU Health Hospital ambulance and Stone City Service & Collision assisted at the scene.
