Ham Radio Operators Host Event At Spring Mill State Park

Last updated on Friday, September 6, 2013

(MITCHELL) - Spring Mill State Park will host amateur radio’s “Indiana Parks on the Air” event from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Ham radio operators from the Daviess County Amateur Radio Club will be located in the parking lot just outside the Virgil I "Gus" Grissom Memorial, near the main gate.

This event is intended to help encourage people to come out and enjoy the amenities in the 25 beautiful Indiana State Parks. Licensed amateur operators will be communicating across Indiana, the United States, and with foreign countries using ham radio equipment and temporary antennas hanging from some of Spring Mill Park's large trees.

Several radio operators will be available to explain the hobby to park visitors.

This type of communications is also used in the event of the failure of telephone and normal radio communications following emergencies and severe weather such as tornadoes and ice storms.

Park admission during the event is $5 per vehicle for in-state residents and $7 per vehicle for out-of-state residents. For more information on this and other upcoming events, contact Coletta Prewitt at 849-3534 or by email at springmillstatepark@dnr.in.gov.
