Grant To Pay For Railroad Bridge In Greene County

Last updated on Monday, September 9, 2013

(GREENE CO.) - The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded an 8.2 million dollar grant to help replace a key railroad bridge in Greene County.

The grant will help Indiana Railroad and Indiana Southern Railroad replace a 115-year-old steel truss bridge that carries traffic across the White River north of Elnora.

The new bridge will remove height and weight limitations.

Companies that move heavy commodities across the bridge include Grain Processing Corporation in Washington, Duke Energy and Indianapolis Power & Light.

In 2012, Berry Plastics, NSA Crane, Duke, GPC and IPL moved a combined 23,000 carloads across the bridge.

The total cost of the replacement project is estimated at 13.7 million dollars.
