(SALEM) - Indiana State Police is investigating the death of an 8-month-old boy.
According to ISP Sgt. Jerry Goodin, Leelan Crain was found unresponsive by his mother while he was taking a nap at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Leelan's mother and her boyfriend took the baby to the St. Vincent's Hospital in Salem by personal vehicle. Once at the hospital, Leelan was transported to the Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, by air ambulance. He was pronounced dead at approximately 1:41 a.m. Sunday.
An autopsy was performed Sunday Morning at the Kentucky Medical Examiner's Office in Louisville. The autopsy preliminarily determined the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head.
Goodin says the official and final determination of the cause of death to Leelan Crain will not be made until the autopsy results are complete which typically takes up to six weeks.
"This is the only information that can be released at this time," Goodin wrote in an email. "As information becomes available I will release it."
Police declined to comment on whether any charges were expected to be filed.
Assisting in the investigation was the Salem City Police Department.
Funeral services for Leelan, who was born Dec. 8, 2012, will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Weathers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11 a.m. to the time of service.
