(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Commissioners are in the final steps to start renovations at the courthouse.
On Tuesday the commissioners looked over plans for the nearly $2.2 million project with Michael Conley of Architura.
More than 100 windows will be replaced and there will be repairs to the courthouse's north entrance.
The commissioners also approved a bid for Ameresco, an independent energy service company to place a new variable refrigerant flow heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system in the courthouse which will replace the old window air conditioning units.
The renovations will be paid using $1 million from the sale of Dunn Memorial Hospital and $1 million from the county's Rainy Day fund with a speculation - that $500,000 will be paid back at $100,000 each year from Cum-Cap.
Conley told the commissioners he hopes to start taking bids on the project at the end of this month and into October, with construction beginning in November.
He estimates the project will take 8 to 10 months to complete.
In other business:
* The commissioners opened bids for salt. The county received three and took those under advisement.
* Highway superintendent Dave Holmes reported crews were cutting brush and mowing. He also said roadwork was completed on Duncan Hill and Back Creek Road and crews will begin work on River Road Wednesday weather permitting.
* County Project Manager Bob Dillon reported that crews continue to work on bridge 55 on Leesville Road over Guthrie Creek.
"The concrete work on our part is finished," Dillon told the commissioners. "We will be working on the approaches."
Dillon estimated that the project should be completed in about 7 weeks.
Dillon also asked the commissioners permission to begin working on bridge 70 which is located on Mount Pleasant Road.
"Some beams have become available at a very good price," Dillon added. "And I would like to have your permission to start the RFD on that project."
The commissioners granted their approval.
"The more bridges we put up the better we are," added Commissioner Dave Flinn.
* Sheriff Sam Craig reported there were 129 inmates at the Security Center, of those 29 were females and 2 were Department of Correction holds.
