(NEWBERRY) - A century-old railroad bridge that handles freight trains in Newberry will be rebuilt thanks to a federal grant that’s footing most of the project’s $13.8 million cost.
Trains using the 115-year-old bridge over the West Fork of the White River in Greene County face weight and speed limits because the span was built in the pin-connected Pratt style to handle loads for the 19th century's lighter trains.
Eric Power of Indiana Rail Road tells the Washington Times-Herald that construction work will begin next month and the rebuild should be done by late next year.
The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the project an $8.2 million grant, Indiana Rail Road added $2 million and Southern Indiana Railroad has contributed $1.5 million. Two utilities Duke Energy and IPL are also helping with financing.
