Brownstown Could Be Home To New Animal Shelter

Last updated on Tuesday, September 24, 2013

(BROWNSTOWN) - The Jackson County commissioners continue to look at the idea of building an animal shelter for stray dogs on property near the jail in Brownstown.

The newest proposal, outlined by Sheriff Michael Carothers during a commissioners meeting last week would require the cooperation of the Jackson County Solid Waste Management District and Seymour city officials.

The waste district would be asked to provide a $250,000 loan to help pay for construction of the building, says Carothers, who is a member of the county's animal control committee.

Other committee members are commissioners President Jerry Hounshel; Debbie Hackman, director of the solid waste management district; county council member Brian Thompson; veterinarian Ron Harrison of Brownstown; Seymour Mayor Craig Luedeman; and Jason Fee, a former county engineer and county resident.
