Man Sentenced In Rape Case

Last updated on Saturday, September 7, 2013

(BROWNSTOWN) - A 56-year-old prison parolee who pleaded guilty to rape and criminal deviate conduct in August received a 35-year prison term in Jackson Circuit Court.

Harold Ray Thompson of Seymour received the sentence from Senior Judge Bill Vance during a sentencing hearing Thursday afternoon. It's part of a plea agreement entered by Thompson on Aug. 19.

Thompson received 12½ years for the rape charge and another 12½ years for the criminal deviate conduct charges, according to court records.

The arrest of Thompson occurred after an investigation by detectives with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.

"It began when a 20-year-old woman went to Seymour Police Department and reported she had been raped," Detective Bob Lucas says.

He described the woman and Thompson as acquaintances.

Thompson, who lives in an apartment east of Seymour, was paroled in January after serving nine years and five months of a 20-year sentence for a rape conviction in Jefferson County, according to the Indiana Department of Correction's offender database.

He was sentenced Aug. 27, 2003.

Seymour Officer Chip Petro initially spoke to the woman, who said she had been raped by Thompson in May at a residence on U.S. 50 east of Seymour.
