Bloomington Residents Will Be Exercising In The Streets Sunday

Last updated on Wednesday, September 25, 2013

(BLOOMINGTON) - Don’t be surprised if you see Bloomington residents doing yoga in the street this weekend.

Bloomington is participating in Open Streets, a crowd sourced fitness event to encourage healthier living, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

West Kirkwood Avenue is being closed to allow visitors to participate in more than two dozen health and fitness exhibits, including Force Fitness and Vibe Yoga.

All activities will be free to the public, and families are encouraged to attend.

Force Fitness General Manager Jake Geary plans to showcase some new workout techniques at his booth, hoping to get more people interested in exercising to help treat obesity and inactivity.

"We're going to be bringing out some portable equipment, some things that are going to be a lot of fun and very interactive, like resistance bands, medicine balls, kettlebells, foam rollers," he says. "We'll be able to show people how to get in a good workout with minimal equipment."

IU Health will be giving away free bike helmets, and other activities include dance stations, an obstacle course hosted by the Boys and Girls Club, and yoga classes.

"We have a great lineup planned so far, we have an all-levels class planned for 10 a.m., and then we are going to do a 30-minute salute to the sun at 11 a.m., which will be sun salutations," says, Laura Patterson, founder of Vibe Yoga.

Vibe Yoga is still in the process of putting together their afternoon activity lineup, and residents are welcome to make suggestions via Twitter.

More than 80 cities in the U.S. and Canada have hosted Open Streets events.
