Man Arrested For Robbing Peoples State Bank

(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington police have arrested a suspect after Peoples State Bank on Bloomington's south side was robbed for the second time Monday afternoon.

33-year-old Christopher Sowers, allegedly wore panty hose over his face and a flashy NFL jersey during a robbery Sept. 5 is believed to have robbed the same bank again Monday, this time wearing a Superman T-shirt.

Sowers was found and arrested within 20 minutes of Monday's robbery at Peoples State Bank on East Winslow Road. Sowers faces two preliminary counts of felony robbery as well as a count of resisting law enforcement.

According to Bloomington Police Capt. Joe Qualters, officers believe he also robbed the same bank last week, in both instances sticking his hands underneath his shirt and claiming he had a gun, demanding cash and running out of the bank on foot.

On Monday, police were called to the bank just after 1 p.m. Police say Sowers fled and threw the Superman t-Shirt in a dumpster behind Winslow Plaza. He allegedly then ran into a wooded area near Graham Drive, just north of the bank.

Police searched the area of Winslow Farms subdivision and Sowers was tracked by police dogs and found in the 400 block of Laurelwood Court at 1:18 p.m.

Qualters say Sowers was staying in a motel in the 1700 block of North Walnut Street, which is where police the gold St. Louis Rams jersey displaying Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk's No. 28. Police also recovered the money stolen Monday and other evidence connecting him to both bank robberies.

The first robbery at Peoples State Bank was reported on Thursday, September 5 at 10:30 a.m. Police were told a a man wearing a gold St. Louis Rams jersey stated he had a gun and demanded bank clerks to put the money on the counter. Sowers allegedly took the money and fled the bank.
