Bedford Man Hurt In Hunting Accident

Last updated on Tuesday, September 3, 2013

(WESTPORT) - Indiana Conservation officers are investigating a hunting accident that left a Bedford man injured.

66-year-old John Nail was taken to the hospital after he was found lying in a ditch on the side of a road in southern Decatur County.

Authorities said he was injured in a fall while hunting squirrels.

Indiana Conservation Officer Zack Walker says at around 2 p.m. a call came in reporting Nail had been found in the ditch by a passerby.

Nail told officers he had been squirrel hunting and was attempting to cross a creek bed around 10:30 a.m. and injured one of his legs. He then attempted to make a brace for his injured led and began walking to his vehicle. He did not have a signal so he couldn't call for help from his cell phone.

While exiting the woods he fell again and injured his other leg. Nail then began crawling and it took him nearly three hours to reach the roadway.

Once to the road he was found by a passerby who called for help. Nail was taken to the Decatur County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Walker says as the hunting seasons begin Indiana Conservation Officers are encourage hunters and outdoorsmen to be safe and follow regulations while in the woods. It is always a good idea to let someone outside of your hunting party know where you will be and when you will return from the woods.

Assisting at the scene were Indiana Conservation officers, deputies from Decatur County Sheriff's Department, officers from Westport Police Department, Decatur County EMS, and Westport Volunteer Fire Department first responders.
