(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Fire Department first responders were called out on several medical runs this weekend because an ambulance was not available.
Firefighters were called to a home in the 1400 block of 21 Street Saturday at 9:57 a.m. after a report of a female having a seizure.
According to BFD Fire Chief Jon Wagner the woman had the seizuer as she was walking down the stairs, which caused her to fall and hit her head.
Firefighters were called to the scene after no ambulances were available.
Firefighters treated the woman and stayed with her 17 minutes until the ambulance crew arrived.
On Saturday at 3:52 p.m. firefighters were dispatched to a home in the 1700 block of P Street after a report of a man not breathing. When firefighters arrived, Bedford Police officers were administrating CPR.
"They had been doing that for about 8 minutes when we arrived," Wagner says. "Then we took over and continued with CPR for another 9 minutes until the ambulance crew arrived."
Wagner says firefighters then drove the ambulance and continued assisting with CPR for another 45 minutes in the back of the ambulance and in the hospital emergency room.
"The out come was not good," Wagner says.
Then on Saturday at 11:02 p.m. officers were called to the Church of God on 16th Street after a child was stranded on a zip line in a field behind the church.
"He was about 20 to 25 feet up in the air," Wagner says. "Ladder One responded."
Firefighters used the ladder to reach the child.
Once free the child was lowered to the ground on the ladder platform and handed over to an ambulance crew to be checked for injuries.
On Monday morning firefighters were called to the scene of an accident in the 300 block of Heltonville Road. Crews stood by after the drive hit a utility pole and knocked down live electrical lines.
"Firefighters secured the scene for about an hour until Duke Energy arrived," Wagner says.
Then at 2:13 p.m. Monday firefighters were called to a home in the 2200 block of M Street after a resident pushed their medical alert button after they had fallen.
Firefighters provided medical assistance until and ambulance crew arrived on the scene.
Then this morning at 12:04 a.m. firefighters were called to an accident scene at 22 and J streets.
Firefighter cleaned automotive fluids from the roadway.
