Work To Begin To Create Stone Gate Arts And Education Center

Last updated on Monday, August 12, 2013

(BEDFORD) - The city of Bedford received two proposals to administer Community Development Block Grant Funds to establish the Stone Gate Arts and Education Center and renovate downtown building facades as part of the Stellar Grant.

The arts and education center will be located in the former JC Penney building at 15th and J streets.

The city will receive $19 million - About $11 million in state and federal grants and about $8 million to renovate the downtown area.

The proposals came from the Southern Indiana Development Commission, based in Loogootee, and Administrative Resources association, which is based in Columbus.

Mayor Shawna Girgis wrote that the payments "are contingent on the final commitment of grant funding by the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs and/or the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority." And will allow city officials to obtain the property, do environmental reviews and other tasks to complete the projects.

The city's board of works received the proposals Friday. A five-member committee: Mayor Girgis; Dan Kirk, the city's planning department and street department director; Jamie Medlock, president of the Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce; and Marla Jones and Susan Gales, who have been working on the Stellar project for months will review the proposals and interview representative of each organization before making a decision.

A tentative award could come at the Aug. 19 meeting of the board of works, which is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in City Hall.
