(WASHINGTON) - Washington residents who are late on their water bill will no longer be issued a red tag but rather officials will be posting a notice on their utility bill that the service will be turned off if their balance is not paid.
The Washington Board of Public Works and Safety approved changes to the policy this week.
Mayor Joe Wellman says during the first six months of this year officials posted more than 2,800 red tags.
Wellman added issuing red tags takes employees time and this way they will have time to deal with other city issues.
Some customers on the verge of having their utilities shut off mentioned to Wellman and other city officials that they often do not pay their utility bills until the red tags are delivered but Wellman is hoping that will change with the new system and prevent workers from having to go shut off the water and then return a short time later to turn it back on.
Wellman says in emergency situations the city will work with residents giving them a chance to pay their overdue bill.
Notice of the new policy will be included in the Sept. bills and will also be posted at the utility office.
