(SALEM) - A fifth-generation Washington County farm has been selected to receive a $50,000 Value-Added Producer Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture.
The Leader-Democrat reports, the grant is to cover the costs of a feasibility study for building a facility that would produce a fertilizer using corn stover. Aaron Lee, one of the owners of Cornerstone Family Farms says the feasibility study will determine the use of cornstalks and biomass material from the farm fields to generate nitrogen-based fertilizer.
Lee explained the study will help determine answers to questions as location, financial feasibility, space, need for the product, availability of corn stover, environmental compatibility and benefits to the community.
Jerry Hay with the USDA says the study could take as long as two years.
Cornerstone Family Farms is based in Salem and farms corn and soybeans in three counties: Lawrence and Jackson in addition to Washington.
