(WASHINGTON CO.) - A Salem man was arrested and charged with murder after police found 46-year-old Joey Verble dead.

According to Washington County Chief Deputy Roger Newlon the stabbing and beating happened near the roadway on Mount Eden Road Thursday night.

When officers arrived at 10:27 p.m. they found Verble dead. Police have arrested 45-year-old David Hook. He is charged with murder and habitual felony offender in connection with the death.

Newlon says the two friends were hanging out, but wouldn't elaborate on what caused the sudden violence.

According to police, Verble was struck multiple times in the head with a claw hammer and stabbed multiple times in the neck and chest resulting in his death. Hook will appear in Washington County Circuit Court this morning at 10:30 to be charges.

Other departments assisting in the investigation are the Indiana State Police, Washington Co. EMS, and the Washington County coroner's office. The investigation continues.
