Otis Park Is Getting A Facelift

Last updated on Thursday, August 29, 2013

(BEDFORD) - The Otis Park is getting a face lift.

Bedford Park Director Mike Mitchell says the band shell will be refurbished and the four stone picnic areas are scheduled for an upgrade.

Crews are clearing brush from the picnic area. Shane Nolan will begin repairing two of the four picnic areas this fall.

Work is also continuing to expand the soccer complex along Leatherwood Road. Mitchell says dirt is being added to the new field on the eastern end of the complex and the pitch should be ready for seeding by spring.

A new irrigation line has been installed along the No. 12 fairway, and sod also was laid along holes 12 and 8, plus the No. 16 tee.

Mitchell says the new septic system needed near the Red Brick will cost approximately $30,000. He explained the system would service the Red Brick, bath house, and pro shop.

Although play has been brisk on the golf course the past few weeks, the heavy traffic hasn't compensated for the miserable spring weather. Revenue is lagging $55,000 behind at the course and $9,000 at the pool, which will close for the season following Labor Day.

Aaron Harrell, course manager at Otis, reports Brice Gordon and his crew have the facility in remarkable shape despite a scarcity of rain for this weekends Claude Akins Golf Classic.

The six-person scramble offers a multitude of team, individual and weekend prizes with morning rounds getting under way at 7:15 a.m. and afternoon rounds start at 1:15 p.m. both days.

Proceeds from the event go to the Akins Scholarship and the BRF Scholarship, given every year to a graduating senior at BNL, as well as many projects involving recreation and improvements.

Harrell says members of the Loyal Order of the Moose will be hosting their state tourney at Otis the weekend following the Akins. More than 200 golfers are expected to participate.
