(UNDATED) - Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig and area volunteer firefighters are asking residents not to burn debris or brush until there is some rainfall.
"With the dry tinder and winds the conditions are perfect for fires," Craig says. "Blazes could spark and spread quickly."
Near record 90-degree temps that will usher out the month of August have caused drought-like conditions for the upcoming Labor Day weekend, but so far there are no burn bans to speak of.
Firefighters are asking residents to use extreme caution if they decide to burn or to wait until the county sees some rainfall.
Firefighters are also asking that motorists do not throw cigarette butts out of car windows and to be careful when using machinery in grassy areas.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says officials are not putting limitations on fires so far at state park properties.
Officials say unless conditions worsen campers can still have fires. But they are asking that the fires be contained to fire rings and that fires be put out before leaving the camp site. "Don't leave anything burning," Grossman added.
"We thank everyone for their cooperation and just ask that they wait until we see some rainfall before doing any burning," Craig says.
