Last updated on Monday, August 5, 2013

(MITCHELL) - Super Oldies DJ Steven Gillespie took home the winning trophy in the adult race at the 3rd Annual Hillbilly 500 Race this past Saturday.

Contestants raced their jalopies which only had steering, brakes and four wheels in common down a ramp for 500 feet to the finish line on Teke Burton Drive.

Draven Livingston won in the kids ages 5 to 8 group.

Ethan Bohnenkamp won in the kids ages 9-13

Austin Kirk won in the teens ages 14-17.

Steven Gillespie claimed the adult trophy.

Winning the Mayor's Choice was Alex Gillihan.

The Radio Station Choice went to James Brown.

The Most Outrageous went to Jathan Stiles.

The Racer with the Most Positive Attitude was Tanner Sipes

Organizer Eddie McLain says 35 cars and drivers participated in this years event.

"This year we had some outstanding designs on cars, some were really creative, and some were simply built," McLain says. "The better they looked didn't mean how well they performed. At least one of those cars, a 1930 look alike built by Alex Gillihan's dad, had countless hours of preparation in paint and designed, featured a custom built front end. Although it was a beautiful car to see, it didn't go as fast as some cars without much creativity at all. It's all about reducing friction against the road, the one that can do this best is the winner."

Participants and spectators donated food and toiletry items for the Lawrence Interfaith Endeavor Food Pantry.
