(NASHVILLE) - The remains of an Indiana Marine killed during World War II have returned home nearly 70 years after he died during the U.S. invasion of a group of Japanese-held islands.
Marine Pfc. Manley Forrest Winkley was 20 when he was shot and killed in combat on Nov. 20, 1943, during the first day of the invasion of the Tarawa Island Atoll in the Pacific Ocean's Gilbert Islands. The Indianapolis man's remains were finally returned to Indiana on Friday.
The Herald-Times reports that a military funeral procession left a Nashville funeral home Saturday morning on a 63-mile trek to the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison.
Linda Wright Welty of Nashville says she's glad her late great-uncle has finally received a proper burial.
