Man Shoots Self In Jail Lobby

Last updated on Friday, August 2, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday, a male walked into the lobby of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department and shot himself.

According to Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig, dispatchers and jailers heard a disturbance in the lobby and then a shot was fired.

The man died from a self inflected wound.

"Because this happened at our facility, the Indiana State Police were called to the department to conduct a death investigation," Craig said.

ISP Sgt. Curt Durnil says 25-year-old Josiah Peters, of Bloomington entered the lobby and then shot himself. He died at the scene. No one else was injured.

The Sheriff's Department and I Street were closed while officers investigated.

The Department is now open.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Troopers continue to talk to those who witnessed the incident and Peters' family and friends. This investigation is continuing and further details will be released as they become available.

Durnil says troopers did go to the home on the eastside of Bloomington where the Peters had been living and checked on a woman. Durnil reports that the woman was okay.
