(BLOOMFIELD) - Criminal cases were filed this week against a Linton woman and a Jasonville man accused of furnishing alcohol to a minor.
Anna Rochelle, of the Greene County Daily World reports, they became suspects in an investigation launched when an ambulance was called to take a 13-year-old girl in severe distress to the emergency room and test results showed the teen had a BAC (blood-alcohol concentration) of .21 percent.
A warrant was issued Wednesday for the arrest of Grace Mathis of Linton on preliminary charges of neglect of a dependent - dependent put into a situation endangering the dependent's life or health -- a class D felony, contributing to the delinquency of a minor -- a class A misdemeanor, and furnishing alcohol to a minor -- a class B misdemeanor.
A summons was issued Wednesday ordering George Hon of Jasonville to appear in court on preliminary charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor -- a class A misdemeanor, and furnishing alcohol to a minor -- a class B misdemeanor.
Officers and were dispatched to a residence in Linton early Saturday, July 27, 2:30-3 a.m. So was an ambulance. The teen's father had called 911 after his daughter arrived home with her mother. The teen was transported to the hospital, but paramedics refused to let the mother ride with the teen in the ambulance because of the mother's alleged disorderly conduct.
The teen was treated at the hospital but when the mother arrived in the emergency room, she allegedly became abusive toward the officers, was shouting, and then kicked an officer as she was being escorted out the door.
The mother, Conchetta M. Crowell, 35, Linton, wound up in jail and was charged with felony battery resulting in bodily injury to a law enforcement officer and misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct and resisting law enforcement.
Officers continued to investigate because they were told the juvenile had become intoxicated while she was at the residence of Mathis who had agreed to babysit the teen for Crowell.
The 13-year-old was dropped off at the residence of Mathis around 9 p.m. July 26 then later picked up by Crowell for the ride home.
Linton Police Officers Mike Harroll and Paul Clark interviewed Mathis and Hon at the Mathis residence then interviewed them again later in the day, and they interviewed the teen after she had recovered from the intoxication enough to give a statement.
Officers allege that while the teen was in the care of Mathis, Mathis offered her a mixed drink of vodka and orange soda, then 15-20 minutes later she mixed another one for the teen. The teen said she consumed four of the drinks and that the fourth one was offered and prepared by Hon who was also at the Mathis residence when the teen was dropped off and when she was picked up.
Crowell's bond was reduced to $1,000 surety with ten percent allowed. She has since posted $100 cash and been released from jail.
Mathis, when arrested, will be held on a standard bond with ten percent cash allowed.
Hon is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 6.
