Police Find No Gun At Oolitic Baseball Field

Last updated on Wednesday, August 14, 2013

(Oolitic) - Lawrence County Police received a phone call Tuesday morning reporting a gun may be hidden near the Oolitic baseball field.

Police received a call from a man reporting that another man who had just been released from jail had possibly hide the gun near the baseball diamond. The caller reported he believed the gun was not loaded.

Officers from Lawrence County and Oolitic Police Departments searched the area Tuesday and found no gun.

"We had officers on the scene with metal detectors and searched the area and found nothing," says Oolitic Deputy Marshal Bill Allen. "We are still investigating and talking to the individual who reported the gun was there."

Allen says no guns have been reported stolen, so he is hoping it is a bogus story.

"Since no gun was reported stolen and we have not found one we are hoping it is a made up story," Allen added. "We will continue to interview those involved to see if it is an accurate story but so far we have not found a weapon."

Allen says officers are continuing their investigation today.

"We are hoping it is not an accurate story and there never was a gun hide in the area," Allen says. "But until we get all the information we will continue to search for the weapon and question those involved."
