IU Students Going To South Africa To Study Disease Transmission Between Humans And Primates

Last updated on Saturday, August 17, 2013

(BLOOMINGTON) - Four Indiana University anthropology students plan to use crowd funding to help pay for a research trip to South Africa.

IU says four researchers studying human evolution want to travel to South Africa to study the relationship of ecotourism to disease transmission between humans and primates. Their focus will be on the Chacma baboon.

The students have set up a website to raise $7,500 for round-trip plane tickets to Cape Point.

Chacma baboons are one of the largest monkeys, with males reaching up to nearly 100 pounds, and in South Africa's Southern Cape Peninsula they are increasingly interacting with humans.

Many wild primate populations have been decimated by diseases transmitted by humans, and many illnesses can be transmitted from wild primates to humans.
