Last updated on Saturday, August 17, 2013

(UNDATED) - The Indiana State Police and numerous local public safety agencies in Brown, Bartholomew, Jennings, and Jefferson Counties will be assisting the Patriot Guard Riders with an official military escort Saturday, August 24.

ISP Sergeant Noel Houze says the procession will be escorting the remains of two Marine Corps veterans who happen to be uncle and nephew.

The uncle, PFC Manley F. Winkley was born in Indianapolis on September 17, 1923 and served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII where he was killed in action on the island of Betio on November 20, 1943 during the Battle of Tarawa.

He was buried in a battlefield cemetery on Betio and from October 29 through November 8, 2012 a Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command Team found the human remains of at least three individuals on the island of Betio.

On April 2, 2013 the remains of one of those individuals was positively identified as PFC Manley F. Winkley, USMCR.

After nearly 70 years on foreign soil where PFC Winkley gave his life for his country, his remains are being brought back to the United States for burial and full military honors.

PFC Winkley's nephew, Cpl. Lyman Winkley was born in Indianapolis on February 11, 1927. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on December 11, 1944 and was honorably discharged on May 28, 1947.

His military records from WWII were damaged in the St. Louis Fire so there is no record of where he served or with what company.

Lyman Winkley re-enlisted in the Marine Corps on August 24, 1950 and was in the 1st Marine Division during the Korean War Battle of Chosin Reservoir.

He was wounded in Yo-Dong on March 22, 1951 and again on April 25, 1951 in Central Korea.

He received the Korean Service Medal with one bronze service star and the Purple Heart with one gold star. He was honorably discharged on September 4, 1951.

PFC Manley Winkley and Cpl. Lyman Winkley's escort will leave the Bond Mitchell Funeral Home in Nashville, indiana on Saturday, August 24 at 11 a.m. and will travel to the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, arriving at 1 p.m. where both will be interred with full military honors.

Sergeant Houze says the Patriot Guard Riders and Indiana State Police, along with local public safety agencies will be involved in the escort and the public is encouraged to show their support for these two military heroes by lining streets and roadways along the route of travel.

The procession will leave the Bond Mitchell Funeral Home in Nashville, IN at 11 a.m. and the following is the route of travel to Madison:

From the funeral home south on State Road 135 to State Road 46 East on State Road 46 into Columbus South on State Road 7 (State Street) from Columbus through North Vernon to Madison where the procession is expected to arrive at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery at approximately 1 p.m.
