Salem Walmart Rumors Spread Throughout Community

Last updated on Friday, August 30, 2013

(SALEM) - Is a Walmart coming to Salem?

The Leader Democrat reports that rumors of Walmart coming are circulating widely, although nothing is official and a Walmart spokesperson says they can't comment on the news.

The latest tidbit comes in the form of what has been called a "file reference" which appears on a petition to annex property located on the city's east side. The reference includes the name Walmart.

Salem Mayor David Bower says the document was prepared at Drew Wright's office and that Wright, attorney for the city, has been working with a development group called Cedarwood Development. The group represents a number of potential retail operators, including Walmart.

Wright is only authorized to say is it's a potential site for a major retail center.

Mayor Bower says the community has been getting interest from a lot of different businesses and that the Washington County Chamber of Commerce has been gathering information for another store - ShopKo.

The petition for annexation, filed with the City of Salem, is seeking annexation of 27.23 acres on the city's east side. The document is signed by Ken Temple, representing Temple & Temple Excavating & Paving Inc.; Larry Cottingim and Sandra Cottongim.

Annexation means the property would become part of the city and city services would be available, such as water, sewer and trash collection as well as police and fire protection.

The city has scheduled a public hearing about the proposed annexation at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in council chambers at Salem City Hall.
