(UNDATED) - Local law enforcement agencies are warning residents about a new virus that is hitting computers.

The Reveton Virus or Ransomware is an alleged FBI popup message that will lock up your computer if opened.

The message states that the user has done something illegal like downloading or distributing copyrighted materials, viewing child pornography or passing along spam.

The message also says the user can avoid prosecution by paying a fine of a few hundred dollars via a Moneypack card. The user is usually threatened with jail time if the fine isn't paid quickly.

The virus, if attached to your system, will attempt to get passwords and financial information.

Police remind users that you should never open any e-mail from an unknown source or click on any attachments they may have.

Police say simply delete any such message.
