(BUCKTOWN) - An incident involving a small child who was found wandering in Greene-Sullivan State Forest last week has generated public concern for his welfare and questions about what, if any consequences the parent might face.

The Greene County Daily World reports, the incident is under investigation and it remains to be seen if anyone will be charged with a criminal offense.

The local Department of Child Services office in Bloomfield is investigating the incident and Greene County Prosecutor Jarrod Holtsclaw says he wants the public to know that his office is looking into the incident and he is awaiting a report from Children Services.

Holtsclaw says he has talked to police officers involved in the case and after receiving the report from Children Services he will make a decision as to whether any criminal charges will be filed.

The naked 2-year-old boy was found by Tim Lewellyn, an engineer for Smithville Telephone. Lewellyn was driving through the forest on business when he came across the crying child.

The child was covered in bug bites, scratches and bruises. Lewellyn wrapped the boy in his shirt, gave him something to drink and took him to an area where he could get a signal on his cell phone and dialed 911. The boy was found about two miles from his home.

The boy's mother told police she got busy and the child slipped out of her sight. When she noticed he was missing, she began a search for him. The child was taken to the Greene County Hospital and DCS released the child back to the custody of the mother Friday evening after interviews and a medical evaluation were completed.
