Federal Budget Cuts Could Cause 8 Firefighters To Be Laid Off At Crane

Last updated on Wednesday, August 21, 2013

(CRANE) - Federal budget cuts are being felt at the Crane Naval Base.

They say months ago they got a letter from the Navy saying they'd have to lay people off - at least eight firefighters will be laid off.

Firefighters at Crane Naval Base are unhappy about a reduction in force.

Early Monday, a number of firefighters lined the streets just outside the gates of the base. The protestors are hoping their efforts will get government attention and put an end to it all.

Federal budget cuts are the reason, but workers said its not a wise move.

They fear that if they lose manpower, fire prevention could be compromised to a degree. That could mean more damaged buildings and more taxpayer money to fix it all.

The firefighters not only provide fire protection on base but also help out in surrounding communities should the need arise.

The cuts could come in the next few months.

The Navy says that the cuts are not part of the sequester.
