AmeriCorps Comes To An End In Jackson County

Last updated on Monday, August 5, 2013

(JACKSON CO.) - A three-year program that has provided thousands of hours of community service and trained many workers in Jackson County has come to an end.

Jackson County United Way's AmeriCorps program did not receive a second round of funding due to the federal sequester, leaving fewer dollars available for the initiative, said United Way director Tonja Couch.

The Corporation for National and Community Service allocated $2.3 million to Indiana for such programs across the state this year; however, funding requests have exceeded $4.8 million, leaving 53 percent of requests unfunded.

Without AmeriCorps workers, many community agencies such as Boys & Girls Club of Seymour, Girls Inc. of Jackson County and Jackson County Public Library will have to cut programming and services, especially those targeting outlying areas of the county, or find other funding sources or use volunteer labor.
